EAA 96 FLY-IN & MODEL EXPO, AUGUST 7, 2011

This event will engage the young and older in a day of flying no other area airport can offer. Nearly four hours of radio control (R/C) aircraft flying from beginning to giant scale (10’ wingspans) and jets will fill the skies in non-stop action.  Attendees will have an opportunity to fly one through a supervised training system.  Youngsters under 8 will build gliders and compete for “longest flight”.

During the day, R/C vendors will be present offering their products and services to assist interested attendees on how to get into the sport.  Aircraft owners and pilots will be available to share how they got into aviation.  Then, there is a full-scale landing contest where attendees can cheer on their favorite pilot in a spot landing and a best landing contest.

This is a family event and inexpensive in lean economic times.  Given the unique aspects, and desire of local families to participate, we anticipate a large crowd.

A recently married Marine killed in Wednesday's helicopter crash at Camp Pendleton has been identified as Sgt. Trevor Cook of Lydonville, N.Y.

Cook, 25, was a native of Orleans, N.Y., who served a combat tour in Afghanistan last year, according to Marine Corps officials.
New York television station WIVB quoted the Marine's father, David Cook, as saying his son was recently married and leaves behind a 23-year-old widow.
"Everybody who came in contact with him loved him," the station quoted the father as saying.
The cause of the crash that occurred in the northern San Mateo area of the base is under investigation, officials said Thursday.
Cook was a crew chief aboard the UH-1Y Huey helicopter with five other troops when it went down about 11:40 a.m.
The pilot and crew were on a regular training mission, authorities said.
The aircraft stationed at Camp Pendleton was part of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing's Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369.
Three of the injured were treated and released at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, a Marine Corps spokesman said.
Two others were still being treated at Orange County's Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where they were listed in good condition, according to the spokesman. Their names and ranks have not been released.
Cook is pictured in 2010 Marine Corps photos taken during a mission in Afghanistan. The photos show him manning a gunport position and scanning a laptop computer.
In a story accompanying the photos, Gunnery Sgt. Steven Williams quotes Cook about the helicopter's role in supporting ground troops.
"There is no better feeling than protecting your brother," he said. "And that's exactly what we're here to do."
Cook's decorations included the Air Medal (fifth award), Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (second award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and NATO Medal.
The crash was the first for a UH-1Y since the Marine Corps started using them for training four years ago.
The Marine Corps has 44 UH-1Y helicopters. They were first deployed to Afghanistan in 2009.

Staff and wire reports

OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A UH-1Y helicopter carrying six personnel crashed on Wednesday at Camp Pendleton, Marine Corps officials said.
The crash occurred about noon in the San Mateo training area in the base’s northern section. The helicopter, known as a Yankee Huey, is a newer, upgraded four-blade version of the utility helicopter.
“There were six personnel aboard the helicopter and they are currently receiving medical attention at this time,” officials with San Diego-based 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing said in a statement. Wing officials provided no other details about the mishap, conditions of the personnel aboard the helicopter or identify the helicopter’s squadron.
At least three of the injured were taken to nearby Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla in San Diego, about 30 miles south of the base, hospital spokeswoman Lisa Ohmstede said. She said she also couldn't discuss their injuries and she didn't know what other hospitals took in patients from the crash.
There is no confirmation of any fatalities, wing spokesman Maj. Jay Delarosa said.
The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that one person died and “several others” were injured in the crash, which prompted a brush fire in the area that was put out by base firefighting crews.
The Huey carries a crew of at least three, including a pilot and copilot.
The mishap is believed to be the first operational crash involving the UH-1Y Huey, which joined the Corps’ inventory in 2008. So far, 44 Yankee Hueys have been delivered to the Corps, which plans to buy 160 of the helicopters, according to service figures
